Prayer Tip: A Collect Prayer

a-collect-prayer

A Collect (pronounced CALL-ect) prayer has different meanings to different people.  Here is one that has very powerful application.  It is a simple prayer with these 5 parts:

  1. Address God using a name or attribute or character trait that demonstrates His authority over the need.
  2. Mention what He has done in redemptive history that is similar to your request.
  3. Request
  4. Mention how God’s answering this request will redound to His glory and advance the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom.
  5. Conclude in Jesus’ Name

Example:

“(For depression) O Lord, our Shepherd and Restorer of our souls, our Creator and healer, nothing is too difficult for You.  You delivered Legion of many demons and instantly put him in his right mind.  Lift _________ out of any depression, balance the needed chemicals in his/her body, free  him/her from a dependency or need for medication and put him/her in a right and healthy mind to love and pursue You with all his/her heart and soul and mind and strength, and to overflow with Your love and joy.  Do this for Your glory and praise and honor and the sake of Your Name which we bear.  Amen.”

Prayer Tip: Walking by Faith

walking-by-faith

Have you experienced a time when you were particularly impressed that you heard a promise from God for a particular need/request…. and then it didn’t happen?

What does faith say then?

I think of Job (13:15) after losing his children, possessions, and health, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.”

Or the 3 Hebrews faced with the fiery furnace, Dan. 3:17-18 “17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Habakkuk 3:17-19  17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. 19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.

When we don’t understand and it feels like our need goes unmet, our tendency is to ‘give up on God’ and look somewhere else for help or simply despair that there is no help.  Consider the disciples’ response.

John 6:67-69  67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

KEEP ON BELEIVING.  For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. Rom. 10:11  Remembering that His ways are much higher than ours and His purposes are much bigger and more glorious than ours.

Prayer Tip: Praise Him, for God Inhabits Praise!

praise-him-for-god-inhabits-praise

I’m so glad we don’t have to worry about word-smithing our prayers, that there’s some “prayer language” we must use to be heard.

I’m convinced that some prayers can’t even be put into words and yet Father hears them and understands.

Matt. 6:8  …for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him.

That’s not to say that we can be careless and flippant.  The fear of God is good and unavoidable as we get to know Him in His awesome otherness.

Closely tied to that, I’m so glad I don’t have to actually verbalize everything I need.  (That would be impossible anyway.)  “You have not because you ask not.” Jas. 4:2 does not equate to “You don’t have unless you ask.”

I’m finding that when I focus on praise and adoration and worship and thanksgiving, my needs are met as well.  I think that’s because God inhabits the praises of His people.

Ps. 22:3  Also note this is how Jesus taught His disciples to begin their prayers.
