Resource List on the Topic of Sexual Assault

Resource-List-Sexual-Assault

As a part of our recent sermon discussing the topic of sexual assault, we wanted to provide a list of resources that we hope will prove helpful in dealing with this issue. We pray that this information will provide Christ-centered hope and wisdom for those who have suffered from sexual abuse as well as anyone with a heart to counsel or protect others.

Books

  • The Wounded Heart, Hope for Adult Victims of Childhood Sexual Abuse by Dr. Dan B. Allender
Sexual abuse knows no religious or social boundaries. The Wounded Heart is an intensely personal and specific look at this form of abuse. Dr. Allender explores the secret lament of the soul damaged by sexual abuse and lays hold of the hope buried there by the One whose unstained image we all bear. Includes information about false memory issues.
  • Rid of My Disgrace by Justin S. Holcomb and Lindsey A. Holcomb
Justin and Lindsey Holcomb outline an approach for moving from destruction to redemption. While avoiding platitudes and shallow theology, Rid of My Disgrace combines biblical and theological depth with up-to-date research. This book is primarily written for those who have been assaulted (either as children or adults) but also equips family, friends, pastors, and others to care for victims in ways that are compassionate, practical, and informed.

Audio

  • The Wounded Heart Complete Seminar Recorded Live on CD
The Wounded Heart CD Seminar is an honest and hopeful journey into the damage of childhood sexual abuse. No matter if you have been abused or not, this is a Seminar that will help you face with greater integrity and hope the reality of living in a fallen world with a God who intends to speak the final word of hope.

Prayer Tip: Do Not Lose Heart in Prayer

do-not-lose-heart-in-prayer

Now He was telling them… that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart. Lk. 18:1

I read that this morning and immediately was convicted to pray for many of my ‘impossible requests’.  These are people I know who are so broken and stuck in their own ways and situations that seem so insurmountable and overwhelming.  And I’ve prayed and prayed before and nothing seems to have changed.  I tend to give up and move on to pray for other things or just not pray much at all.

NEVER GIVE UP.  Listen to hear if God would have you change in any way what you are asking for, but persevere in prayer.

“shall not God bring about justice for His elect, who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?”  vs. 7

“when the Son of Man comes, will He find (this kind of persevering) faith on the earth?” Vs. 8

Be open and earnestly seek any ‘prayer modifications’ God would have you make, but KEEP ON PRAYING.

Luke 11:10 For everyone who asks (and keeps on asking), receives; and he who seeks (and keeps on seeking), finds; and to him who knocks (and keeps on knocking), it will be opened.

Prayer Tip: Faith Grows by Persistence in Coming

Faith-Grows-by-Persistence-in-Coming

Recall:  The great invitation by God to all through the finished work of Jesus is, “Come.”  Our needs are met when we come to Jesus.

John 6:37b  the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

Phil.4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

But sometimes the coming seems really difficult with so many distractions and obstacles.  We can feel crippled by the pain and confused by the ‘Why did God let this happen?  Can I trust Him?’ questions.

This is the place where faith grows.  This is the time to ‘walk by faith (what God says is true) not by sight (what seems to be true)’. II Cor. 5:7

Our efforts to move toward God are often very feeble and small; but remember the example of Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness – all who were bitten by a deadly serpent and looked at it in obedience lived.

In the same way Jesus was lifted up (on the cross) on our behalf that all who look to Him in obedient faith will live (have life to the full John 10:10; have all they need for life and godliness II Pet. 1:3)

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

Keep looking to Jesus today for the BIG THINGS and the small things – actually ‘everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving…’ (Phil. 4:6)

Prayer Tip: How Do I Know What to Pray?

how-do-i-know-what-to-pray

Life gets so complicated. How do you know the right thing to do? How do you know what to pray?

It’s always appropriate and good to ask for wisdom.

James 1:5-8 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

This is a great parenting passage. I think God wrote it just for parents.

This is a great business-persons passage. I think God wrote it just for people who make huge decisions in their business and work.

This is a great passage for anyone who wants to live life to the full. I think God wrote it just for you and me.

Ask in faith. Pray for wisdom and believe God will surely give it to you. Ask with an attitude of surrender, wide open to whatever He would say to you. Stay in the discovery mode, listening for God’s answer, already postured and determined to step out in obedience to His clear direction. Refuse to lean on your own understanding. (Prov. 3:5)

Ask without any doubting. God gives to those who ask and diligently seek Him. God is also the sole source of wisdom – what you’re asking for. Consider –

James 1:16-17 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

Remember, if it’s not from God then it’s not good.
