Prayer Tip: Do Not Worry About Anything

do-not-worry-about-anything

‘Be anxious for nothing…’!  The Living Bible paraphrases it, ‘Don’t worry about anything…’  Philippians 4:6

What do you worry about?

Note this is not just a suggestion for happier living and it doesn’t include an ‘if you can’ clause.  This is a command.  How on earth…with the challenges of life…and the pain…and the mess…the suffering…the injustice…all the uncertainty…??

The verse goes on to tell us how, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

How do we not worry?  Pray.  Pray about everything.  And make requests, ask God for what you need.  But do it with a willful focus on thanksgiving.

What do you have to be thankful for?  For starters, He is the One who gives life and breath and all things to all people. (Acts 17:25)  Look around you.  Is there nothing you see that you can give thanks for?  (Note it doesn’t say feel thankful, you can will to give thanks.)

Especially if you don’t feel thankful but even when you do, also thank Him for what you do not see – His unlimited love which is from eternity past to eternity future, His salvation which is so complete, His abiding presence, His promise of heaven when all this is over.  Thank Him for the good He is working on your behalf.  Romans 8:28

Pray with confidence, full assurance that He is and that He hears and that He cares and that He is well able to help.

Hebrews 11:6  … he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

I’m praying you have a worry free (give the worries to God) and joyful week of giving thanks to our great Creator God.

Prayer Tip: Lord, Teach Us to Pray

lord-teach-us-to-pray

Wouldn’t it have been amazing to pray out loud with Jesus?  How would you pray?  What would you ask for?  The disciples got to do that at certain times when they were within earshot.  We get to do it all the time since the God-head actually lives in us.

Maybe feeling a little inadequate and certainly wanting to pray with greater power and effect, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them.

Luke 11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Jesus answered them by giving them a model/outline by which to shape their prayers, what we call the “Lord’s Prayer”.  And then He follows that with an illustration about a person who makes an urgent request of a friend.  While the person comes and asks because of their relationship, the friend gives him what he asks for, not because they’re friends or because of how he asks, but simply because of his persistence in asking.  (Luke 11:8)

The best way to learn and grow in prayer is simply to pray.

“The great people of the earth today are the people who pray.  I do not mean those who talk about prayer; nor those who say they believe in prayer; nor yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean those people who take time and pray.  They have not time.  It must be taken from something else.  This something else is important.  Very important, and pressing, but still less important and less pressing than prayer.”  – S. D. Gordon

Let’s pray – and don’t forget the listening part.
