Prayer Tip: A Collect Prayer

A Collect (pronounced CALL-ect) prayer has different meanings to different people.  Here is one that has very powerful application.  It is a simple prayer with these 5 parts:

  • Address God using a name or attribute or character trait that demonstrates His authority over the need.
  • Mention what He has done in redemptive history that is similar to your request.
  • Request
  • Mention how God’s answering this request will redound to His glory and advance the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom.
  • Conclude in Jesus’ Name

Example:  (For depression) O Lord, our Shepherd and Restorer of our souls, our Creator and healer, nothing is too difficult for You.

You delivered Legion of many demons and instantly put him in his right mind.

Lift _________ out of any depression, balance the needed chemicals in his/her body, free  him/her from a dependency or need for medication and put him/her in a right and healthy mind to love and pursue You with all his/her heart and soul and mind and strength, and to overflow with Your love and joy.

Do this for Your glory and praise and honor and the sake of Your Name which we bear.  Amen.

Prayer Tip: Characteristics of Praying in the Spirit

Eph. 6:18 ‘praying always in the Spirit’, what are some of the characteristics of doing so?

Praying in faith – believing that He is and that He rewards those who seek Him.  Heb. 11:6

Confident that God causes all things to work together for good.  Rom. 8:28

Praying with thanksgiving rather than worry and anxiety – Phil. 4:6

Entering His presence with praise and adoration and thanksgiving – Ps. 100:4

Being aware that the only way I can stand in His presence is by the blood of Christ continually cleansing me from all sin – Heb. 10:19-22

Praying scripture, particularly the promises of God.

In the book Reese Howells Intercessor he relates that God impressed upon him very clearly to “pray only the prayers that I give you.”  He said the result was victorious prayer that always got answered.  I often ask the Lord to show me what to pray in a situation or for a presenting need.  Then I try to listen and pray what He impresses upon me to pray.

All of this is part of getting to know God.

Fruit Bearing: Why So Little?

Have you ever asked why so few coming to Christ in your area of the field when Jesus said, ‘..the fields are white (very ripe) for harvest’?  I have.

I’m sure there are a number of factors that must be considered but Jesus instructed us to start with prayer (and some self-examination).  Matt. 9:38

“The Church has not yet touched the fringe of the possibilities of intercessory prayer. Her largest victories will be witnessed when individual Christians everywhere come to recognize their priesthood unto God and day by day give themselves unto prayer.” – John R. Mott

“Pray for ‘all men.’ We usually pray more for things than we do for men. Our prayers should be thrown across their pathway as they rush in their downward course to a lost eternity.” – E.M. Bounds

I’m guilty of cursory praying and not enough intercessory praying.

May God give us eyes to see Him more clearly, ears to hear what He is saying, hearts to believe “He is good and ready to forgive and abundant in loving kindness to all who call on Him”, and the will to pray for the eternal even more than the temporal.
