Prayer Tip: Prayer for Governing Leaders

I Timothy 2:1,2  1 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

What are some key things we can pray specifically for governing leaders at all levels and all spheres of influence?  (from notes by Dick Eastman)

  • That unrighteous leaders will make mistakes that actually advance the gospel.  (Ps. 109:29 Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.)
  • That tyrannical leaders fall from power through unsound advice.  (Ps. 5:10 Hold them guilty, O God; By their own devices let them fall! In the multitude of their transgressions thrust them out, For they are rebellious against You.)
  • That Godly leaders discover and apply spiritual wisdom by which to govern.  (Prov. 28:2 When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.)
  • That all leaders receive a personal witness of the gospel.  (Isa. 52:15 so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.)
  • That all leaders realize their authority comes from God and they will be held accountable for how they exercise it.  (Dan. 2:20-21 “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him. 21 ”It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.”)

These are desperate times calling us to much prayer.

Prayer Tip: Never Resist the Urge to Pray

When should I pray?  All the time… 1 Thess. 5:17

On the face of it, that seems impossible and impractical.  So I think of it more ‘as the attitude and posture of my heart.’  But even that seems too intangible.

I’m finding a very practical application is to simply take advantage of every impulse/reminder to pray – out loud and with others if appropriate but certainly silently and with the heart as well as conscious thought.

“Always respond to every impulse to pray. I would make an absolute law of this – always obey such an impulse.  Where does it come from? It is the work of the Holy Spirit; it is a part of the meaning of ‘Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure’ (Phil 2:12-13).”    Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Commit yourself to respond to every impulse to pray this week.  I think you’ll be surprised at how often that is and how God delights in us as we do.

Prayer Tip: Helplessness Acknowledged by Prayer

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor (ptochos – utterly helpless and destitute, no hope apart from a handout) in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus says we are blessed if we recognize and acknowledge our true condition of helplessness because then we will cry out to Him for help and rely on Him in our neediness.

Jerry Bridges in his book The Discipline of Grace says, “Prayer is the tangible expression of our dependence (on Christ).  We may think we’re dependent on Christ, but if our prayer life is meager or perfunctory, we thereby deny it.  We’re in effect saying we can handle our spiritual life through self-discipline and our innate goodness.  Or perhaps we’re not even committed to the pursuit of holiness.”

C.S. Lewis understood this when he said, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time – waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God – it changes me.”

When you are faced with a challenge, a problem, a need, whatever its size and nature, is your first thought to pray or does that tend to come after you’ve tried ‘everything else’?

May God continue to change us today to be a people who pray.

Prayer Tip: Do Not Lose Heart

Now He was telling them…that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart. Lk.18:1

When I read that I am immediately convicted to pray for many of my ‘impossible requests’.  These are people I know who are so broken and stuck in their own ways and situations that seem so insurmountable and overwhelming.  And I’ve prayed and prayed before and nothing seems to have changed.  I tend to give up and move on to pray for other things or just not pray much at all.

NEVER GIVE UP.  Listen to hear if God would have you change in any way what you are asking for, but persevere in prayer.

“shall not God bring about justice for His elect, who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?”  vs. 7

“when the Son of Man comes, will He find (this kind of persevering) faith on the earth? Vs. 8

Be open and earnestly seek any ‘prayer modifications’ God would have you make, but KEEP ON PRAYING.

Luke 11:10 For everyone who asks (and keeps on asking), receives; and he who seeks (and keeps on seeking), finds; and to him who knocks (and keeps on knocking), it will be opened.

Prayer Tip: Faith Grows by Persistence in Coming

Recall:  The great invitation by God to all through the finished work of Jesus is, “Come.”  Our needs are met when we come to Jesus.

John 6:37b  the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

Phil.4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

But sometimes the coming seems really difficult with so many distractions and obstacles.  We can feel crippled by the pain and confused by the ‘Why did God let this happen?  Can I trust Him?’ questions.

This is the place where faith grows.  This is the time to ‘walk by faith (what God says is true) not by sight (what seems to be true)’. II Cor. 5:7

Our efforts to move toward God are often very feeble and small; but remember the example of Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness – all who were bitten by a deadly serpent and looked at it in obedience lived.

In the same way Jesus was lifted up (on the cross) on our behalf that all who look to Him in obedient faith will live (have life to the full John 10:10; have all they need for life and godliness II Pet. 1:3)

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

Keep looking to Jesus today for the BIG THINGS and the small things – actually ‘everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving…’ (Phil. 4:6)
