Prayer Tip: When Prayers Go ‘Unanswered’

When prayers go ‘unanswered’, the answer may have been “No.” or simply “Wait.”  (The tree of life in the Garden was good fruit enabling us to live forever but we mercifully must wait for heaven to eat it.)

But is it possible that ‘unanswered’ really means I didn’t get what I wanted when I wanted it?

Or James says it may be, “You don’t get what you ask because your whole aim is wrong – you want only what will give you pleasure. ..If your aim is to enjoy the evil pleasure of the unsaved world, you cannot also be a friend of God.  The Holy Spirit, whom God has placed within us, watches over us with tender jealousy.  But He gives us more and more strength to stand against all such evil longings.    (Jas. 4:3-6 LB)

God is all about transforming the desires and motives of our heart.

Why would God, who is jealous for my undivided love and worship – knowing that’s my created purpose –  give me something which in reality displaces Him or helps me go my own way and feel self-sufficient or mistakenly feel like I’m in control (like God) and can manage perfectly well on my own?  Anything that I look to for ‘real life’ and joy and fulfillment is my god.

Delight yourself in God (alone) and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Ps. 37:4

As I delight in Him my heart is changed and I want only what He wants – which He assures us is good, well pleasing, and perfect.  Rom. 12:2

Prayer Tip: What Can You Give God Today?

Have you ever stopped and asked God, “What can I give to You today?”

We’re always in need and God is always generous and gives without reproach, so as His children we are certainly told to ask.  But have you ever just stopped and prayed, “God, what can I give to You?”

Why not stop and ask Him right now?  …Listen….what did He say?

Some of the immediate things I hear are:  worship, gratitude, praise, time – time to relax and just be with Him and enjoy Him.

Sometimes I hear things like:  all my worries, anxiety, bitterness and anger, all my cares and concerns, goals and dreams and plans and schedule.

Maybe one key to consider is ‘What do I have?’  ‘What am I holding on to?’  ‘What do I really treasure?’.

So what do you have in your hand, your mind, your heart?  Give it all to Him.

That’s real freedom!  That’s REAL life!

Prayer Tip: God Still Waits – Fast and Pray

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, and with fasting weeping and mourning; and rend your heart and not your garments.” Now return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness and relenting of evil.  Joel 2:12-13

God, who determines the times and boundaries of nations, is giving US a little more time to reject the head-long pursuit of our own way and return to acknowledging Him as the source of our freedoms and the many blessing we have enjoyed as a nation.

And what is the key to our nation’s return to acknowledging God as God? We (the church) are.

…if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.      2 Chronicles 7:14

Let’s pray for ‘godly sorrow leading to genuine repentance’ (2 Cor. 7:10) for ourselves, our local church, and the church in America. And for this to happen, we need to experience ‘fear of God’, whatever that is. (see Psalm 36:1-2 NIV)

So I PRAY that the church in America and we as a nation come to know ‘fear of God’.

Prayer Tip: Discouragement

When I don’t see much happening by way of ‘my ministry’, should I go somewhere else, some place where God is working and the harvest is plentiful?  Possibly.  God could be initiating a restlessness in preparation for a move.  Keep talking to God about it and staying open.

What came to my mind when I voiced this question to God was, “You can go anywhere in the world and at any time through the avenue of prayer….and make an impact.”

The Lord’s instruction upon pointing out that the harvest is plentiful was to, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to thrust out laborers into the harvest.”  Matt. 9:38

“(the) power of prayer can never be overrated. They who cannot serve God by preaching need not regret.  If a man can but pray he can do anything. He who knows how to overcome with God in prayer has Heaven and earth at his disposal.” – Charles Spurgeon

“The greatest thing anyone can do for God and man is pray.  You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed.”  S.D. Gordon

Luke 18:1  Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart,..

OK! Now that you have prayed, go talk to somebody about Jesus.
