Prayer Tip #66: “Giving” and “Give me” Prayer

[From Lauris Shepherd, one of our Elders]

“The greatest thing anyone can do for God and man is to pray.”  S.D. Gordon

Too often we think of prayer as “ the least I can do.”

“Prayer for others is a form of giving, and praying for God’s best in our lives is part of giving ourselves to Him.  As we form the habit of ‘giving’ prayers, we start growing out of our natural tendency to major on ‘give me’ prayers.”  Ruth Myers

What a privilege to be a part of God’s greater purposes for all of creation and people everywhere.  Our model for how to pray, the Lord’s Prayer, has seven requests; six relate to God’s purposes and our spiritual needs, and one to our practical needs.

Do you feel like your world is really small and not very significant?  Pray!  Pray for the nations right in your own community.  Pray for the nations around the world.  Pray for our missionaries and others who are advancing the gospel around the world.

Never give up.

Gal. 6:9  Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

While all kinds of prayers delight God, let’s be generous this week with ‘giving’ prayer.

Prayer Tip #65: Whatever you ask… will be granted

[From Lauris Shepherd, one of our Elders]

Mark 11:22-24  22 And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God. 23 “Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. 24 “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.

What a promise!!  Is it really true?  Has this been your experience in prayer?

Some thoughts regarding these verses:

The object of our faith is critical.  Have faith in God.  We tend to look to other things and people and….whatever, to help God out.

The verses do not address the timing of God’s answers.  Many times we want instant answers and get impatient and give up and leave before the answer comes.  And we miss it.

If we really believe we are asking according to His will and that we will receive what we ask, wouldn’t we spend time giving thanks while we wait for the promised answer?  Too often we never get out of the asking mode and into the ‘believe it’s on the way’ mode and we get stuck on the asking part with very little thanksgiving.

This week let’s ask God, “What is a specific application of these verses for me?”  And then listen with determination to do what He shows you.

Prayer Tip #64: Discouragement

[From Lauris Shepherd, one of our Elders]

I recently confessed to the Lord discouragement and lethargy in prayer and asked why?

The Psalmist struggled with this from time to time.  Psalm 42:5a  Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me?

What came to mind?  Little faith due to a divided focus – Jesus plus something.  It’s easy to begin looking to someone/something else for provision of a need, fulfillment, excitement, LIFE.  And He’s the sole source.

I Samuel 12:21 You must not turn aside (from following the Lord), for then you would go after futile things which cannot profit or deliver, because they are futile.

The other thing that came to mind was failing to ‘put feet to my prayers’ i.e. not giving myself wholeheartedly when He shows me how to be part of the answer.

The Psalmist’s answer is, “Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.”  Ps. 42:5b

How do you hope in God when it seems like nothing is changing for the better and in fact is getting worse?  Stay focused on God by staying focused on His promises, like Romans 8:28; James 1:2-4; Psalm 23; Romans 8:32  and many more.

Do you keep a list and review the promises He’s given to you?

He has proven Himself faithful!  Joshua 23:14 …not one word of all the good words which the LORD your God spoke concerning you has failed…
